A Reminder

A long time ago (December 2003) I wrote a few articles on the drug G, GBH, Liquid Ecstasy. My point of the articles and my belief is about harm minimisation.

Whilst I do not have an opinion either way on whether drugs are bad or good, I do believe that prohibition of illegal substances does not work and they should be licensed. I read during the week that more tan 25% of deaths of people aged 18 - 25 are caused by alcohol, but less than one percent of the deaths are caused by illegal drugs.

G however is a dangerous drug, as is Tina (Crystal) and a few years back people were dropping left right and center after taking a bit too much G. The difference between an overdose and a 'good' dose is negligible. It acts as a central nervous system depressant (like alcohol) and an overdose causes people to rapidly fall unconscious and their respiratory system to cease working.

Back in 2003 it was the "new" drug of choice for many people, it was easy to get, virtually undetectable and cheap. It is also a drug that is commonly used as a date rape drug, as the the effects can also be an amnesiac and a paralasys of the body, so someone can be easily drugged.

Over the last couple of years most clubs, dance parties etc have become even stricter than before on party drugs especially G, because back then so may people really were dropping in clubs and needed emergency life saving medical care.

People have also become complacent again about the drug, if a mate goes to "g sleep" they let then sleep, or they wait till the absolute last possible moment to call for help, which can have disastrous consequences.

In fact, I found out today that a friend of a friend had in fact died a couple of weeks back from a G overdose. In this case he had been given the drug in a club and left the club as he felt unwell and on the way home started spinning out and going into g shock. By the time he was home he was unconscious and by the time the ambulance arrived it was too late.

As I wrote four years ago, I have a request to people, G is dangerous, if you must take it be careful, and if you see someone in trouble don't wait to get help, get it as quickly as you can!

Hacker turns US presidential candidate's site pro-gay

McCain, a Republican Senator and presidential hopeful, has a record of "U-turns" on gay issues.

MySpace site of John McCain has been manipulated to make it appear as if he supports lesbian marriage.Mike Davidson, a web publisher and writer, has claimed responsibility for the prank.A message was placed on the website supporting gay marriage.

It read:

"Dear Supporters, today I announce that I have reversed my position and come out in full support of gay marriage... particularly marriage between two passionate females."

McCain, a Republican Senator and presidential hopeful, has a record of "U-turns" on gay issues. At 70, he is the oldest candidate for the Presidency and would be the oldest person to be elected to the office if he won the election in 2008.

Davidson claims that McCain's camp hijacked HTML code from his website to create a template for the McCain site.

On his own website, Newsvine, Davidson said: "You see, John McCain's people commandeered my world-renowned MySpace design template, they did not credit me for the template, even though the template explicitly requested credit. They used my own unmodified imagery, specifically for the "Contacting John McCain" table."

As if that wasn't bad enough, the McCain crew is actually pulling their image direct from my server on each page load. So every time someone visits the McCain MySpace page, my bandwidth is being used to deliver part of the page!

Bad McCain! "Davidson claims that because no servers but his own were touched, no laws have been broken.

Pint Size Antony Callea confirms he is Gay

After weeks of discussions regarding Pint Sized singer Anthony Callea's sexuality, he has finally admitted he is gay.

In an interview yesterday he talks about his sexuality and his difficulty in growing up gay and Italian in Australia. I was really interested to read that he talks about going to a psychologist to address his depression stemming from dealing with his sexuality.
He also says that he is disappointed that he denied he was gay a few years ago in interviews, but was pushed into it by his 'minders' to give him a better chance of winning the Australian Idol competition.

As I said in my previous post I would wait to see whether he uses this as a way to help other guys and girls coming out and addressing their sexuality.

Congratulations to Anthony for coming out and I hope that he now puts his name to something great that will help the community and teens!

My Dilema Explored and Decided

Thanks to everyone who took the time to leave a comment or send me an email on my work dilemma. I was interested to read people's opinions on what I should do.

In the end I have decided that I will not actively pursue the client and if they do come back and really want the product I will charge full (and I mean full) price without any discount.

I will however not provide any quotes or offer for strategy or design.

So if they call back they can have the software, but I will not follow the normal sales process and follow up with phone calls, emails etc.

Is it discrimination?

Yes probably so, but then again I think if they met me and discovered I was gay they probably would not buy our software anyway. I could also let slip if they do ring back as one person suggested!

Disappointment

For the last month or so I had been interested in having Laser eye surgery so I would no longer have to wear contact lenses or glasses.

This was bought about because a friend and his boyfriend had theirs done and their health fund covered almost the entire cost! I was told originally that my health fund would cover the majority of the surgery cost which is about $2750 per eye.

However it turns out that my health fund does not cover laser eye surgery, so for the time being at least I will just have to wear my contact lenses.

*Sigh, maybe we should change health insurance funds hehehe

Connundrum

I was called this afternoon by a potential client looking for one of our products.

I chatted and did the normal five minutes needs analysis.

Problem is the business they are in.

They are a christian right wing Bible College!

On the one hand I do not like doing business with people who have beliefs or values that I believe are detrimental to society, but on the other hand money is money!

Ideas?

Thoughts?

What would you guys / gals do?

Sorting Through Objectives, Tactics and Targets

Working for yourself means that you need to constantly motivate yourself and at times this can be extraordinarily difficult.
Contrary to what most people think of me, I can be indecisive and un-focused at the best of times. Being in a smaller business you have to balance the need positive cash flow against the future growth strategy.
At the moment I am at a sort of cross roads, as there could be some significant change in situations in the short term, but there might not be too. So I have to plan for both roads forward which is difficult in itself.
It's extremely frustrating to sit down and try to write a set of both personal and business objectives whilst the immediate short term (an longer as well) is so variable.
I have a fairly good plan sketched out that takes advantage of both roads, but I know that in the medium term I must end up choosing one strategy and placing all the emphasis upon one business model.
I used to review eCommerce Business models for a large consulting company, and quite often I would be the main strategist on these models too. One of the clear success factors of most small businesses is their ability to focus on something and make a name for themselves in one business or ability.
My company and by default myself, have built a fantastic name in my field of what I do, and my company's software is very popular amongst our user base.
But I am now taking the software from a distributed installation model to what I think is the future, a centralised hub (SAAS) with only a tiny and easily controllable distributed application requirement.
Over the last few months I have been polling my existing clients, talking to people in the industry and obviously reviewing the competitors.
For the last three months the actually coding and development of the new software has been ongoing. But there are some pretty fundamental business model questions that are still not clear which have an impact on some of the work.
*Sigh I didn't mean this post to be a rant about frustration, but as you can read I am frustrated! I need time out, proper time out with no clients etc to map out on paper and the whiteboard all the business model options and outcomes
I need to be able to treat myself and my company like a client, but we keep on winning work, which means we don't have the time to focus on ourselves
I am thinking of refusing any new client projects for myself from starting in April and just using the month to focus entirely on the one thing!

Frustration!

Holiday Wrap Up

The one thing I have bought back from our small trip away is a Fire Coral Rash on my arm! Yes I was snorkeling on the reef and trying to take some underwater pictures of the coral when my arm brushed up against the coral.

At the time it disn't seem all that bad just a bit of a sting, but a few days on and I have these itchy red raised welts all over the spot. So a quick review of the Internet and a discussion with the pharmacist and I am smothering hydro-cortisone cream all over the rash.

Yikes it better go away soon, cause it looks disgusting and itches like hell!

Beagle News

The Beagle is back with us after her sojourn at Doggy Day Care, apparenetly she was given a nickname there "never stops", as she never stops playing or goading the other puppies. She was excstatic to see us, licking biting and jumping up which was so nice to see!

But a week away playing with other puppies and she is exhausted. She has pretty much slept since then which is sooooooooo cute!

I am so glad to have my little baby back with me!

It's also the wildlife

Part of the charm of the Island we are staying at is the wildlife and in particular the birds.

There are hundreds of very cocky Cockatoos, an Australian Native bird which is pure white with a sulfur crest at the top of it's head.

These birds are incredibly cute but incredibly pushy, and they can be very destructive as anyone in Australia knows. We do have them in Sydney too, but up here at the Island they are a lot more tame and almost have a contempt for people that let's them really push the boundaries of being a wild animal.

They will swoop down on you as you eat outside and battle for your food, even if you are still eating off the table!

The other really very cute wildlife are the ducks which float around in the pool and then walk up and down the tables with people having lunch, checking for crumbs and other tasty morsels!

So we are on our way home now and in a few hours I can see the puppy in less than eight hours! I am so excited to see her. After a couple of days of eating drinking and generally being quite busy (it was a work / personal trip for us) I am looking forward to my own bed tonight!

Holidays

I must admit that it's nice to be away from the city and away from the normal bits and pieces of life.

But I do miss my puppy!

I have been accused of being a first parent because I called the Doggy Day Care on Sunday and checked on her LOL.

But I have refrained from calling since then because I don't want to be that much of a worrying parent!

All in all holidays are tough, but hey someone has to do it!

Everyone's on Holidays except the cat!!

Being away on the work break is fun, although I must admit that when I left the puppy at Doggy Day Care yesterday I was sad!

But seeing the puppy playing with five other dogs racing around, I knew that she will have a fabulous time.

Speaking to Rose (Puppy Day Care owner) this morning was quite funy, Rose was as expected a bit confused over which dog was which until I reminded her that Lucy is the Beagle and all the confusion stopped.

So the Beagle is well and happy, non stop playing with the other dogs and has made herself a bed up on a table in amongst towels and stuff.

So lie Lucy as she likes to be up high so she can see everything and everyone!

I know I know I am such a sap!

My Puppy is going on holidays

Starting tomorrow the boy and I have a week of work related R&R, two days in a hotel in town and then four days on an Island in the Whitsundays.

But this is the first time i will have ever been apart from more then twenty four hours from Lucy the Beagle! It sounds ridiculous really, because I have a twelve year old cat whom I have left to go holidays hundreds of times.

But this is different, a dog is very much like a child, considering the beagle and I share so much time together (she comes to work with me every day too).

So what to do with a beagle who does not like being left alone for long (she chews anything from expensive chairs to her bed, the sofa etc).

The cat is easy, one of our friends will pop in every morning and night, changer her water, give her some food and attention. And if they are lucky she may deign them with her presence and sit on them and let them pat her.

That's just the way it is with the cat.

But the beagle! NO WAY could we leave the beagle like that! There would be nothing left of the apartment after the first day, and then she would probably chew her way through the front door and visiting the neighbours!

My sister offered to look after her, but the beagle is a huge handful and I don't want to inflict upon someone the beagles bad and naughty behaviour.

So we started looking around at dog kennels, but I wouldn't even send a dog I didn't like to one of those places! Imagine concrete floored cages with dogs in them, YUCK! And for a beagle who craves attention and is a pack animal that would be just plain mean.

One of our friends though recommended a Doggy Day Care Centre in Bronte. A lovely lady named Rose looks after a number f dogs for either day care or longer term care in her home and treats the dogs just like her own! They all get to play together, go for walks, sleep inside at night, get lots and lots of attention, so it's just like going on holidays for Lucy!

So tomorrow morning Lucy the beagle goes on holidays! I hope she enjoys herself!

oh and yeas the cat has pink safety claws in the picture!

So Finally Anthony Callea has been outed

It has been reported that Anthony Callea finalist of Australian Idol 2004 has been accidentally outed by a TV Traffic reporter (source).

Whilst this comes as no surprise to any gay guy who has seen him or met him or snogged him in the last few years at Stonewall Hotel in Sydney's Oxford Street. This news has devastated the legion of young girls who kissed his picture nightly on their bedroom walls.

As Rodney Croome points out it will be very interesting to see whether he acknowledges his sexuality (he has denied he is gay in the past, and has danced around the issue).

I am not a huge fan of his voice or his music, but he will certainly gain my respect if he stands up and publicly acknowledges his sexuality.

Anthony has an opportunity to tell people that it's OK to be gay and not hide or deny any longer!

The weekend's wrap up

So it's finally Tuesday and I am in the mood to start documenting what is the equivalent of gay Christmas in Sydney, the Mardi Gras season.

I must admit that this year's celebrations were different than other years for us. For me the week was a lot quieter than normal because of the wound on my leg which was still hurting and casuing me some grief, but in the main by the weekend it only hurt when I used my leg in certain ways.

We had decided that for the first time in seven years we were not going to do the Mardi Gras party and owuld instead do the Toybox party the next day.

We agonised over the decision, but with the police shut down of Azzure the weekend before and the general dismap at the dis-organisation and seemingly stupid decisions and comments of New Mardi Gras itself we were quite happy with our choice.

The New Mardi Gras organisation just seems to have lost their way and I do not feel they represent the community's best interests any more. Ever since the original Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras organisation went broke a few years back, the New Mardi Gras seemed to have lost the plot.

The parties last year, Sleaze & Mardi Gras were lack lustre and seemed to lack a special something. Personally I think that Mardi Gras things that because they are "Mardi Gras" they can get away with giving the punters less for their money.

Having been to a Toybox party at Fox Studios (the same venue as Mardi Gras and Sleaze) I cannot understand how the Mardi Gras parties are not as good!

But I digress really!

I had meant to go to the Sydney Bloggers meet Melbourne Bloggers on Friday night, but we ended up have unexpected guests from interstate for the weekend! It was really nice to have the boys from the sunshine state and it made the weekend all that more enjoyable!

As is our usual tradition we threw a Mardi Gras Parade Party on Saturday night at our apartment which overlooks the parade route. We had an amazing party and I only just remember crawling into bed at about 3am for a few hours of sleep before getting up and going to Toybox at Luna Park.

Now I must admit that I was slightly disappointed by the Toybox experience, it was a great party, but I just didn't like the venue all that much and found that there was not quite enough chill out spaces.

Who knows maybe I am just expecting too much from the parties! But I still think it was a much better party than Mardi Gras would have been for us!

After partying till about 8pm at Toybox we jumped in the gay bus (yes full of gay and lesbian revellers heading back into town (and no the bus was not named Priscilla LOL). Then we made a last minute decision to head out to Amazon Homesexual at Home Nightclub in Darling Harbor.

I must admit that I did not last long at this party. By about midnight the lack of food for twenty four hours was seriously catching up with me and my stomach was churning. So I headed home to bed.

So all in all a good weekend, great party at our apartment and loads of fun out and about!

Looking out on Oxford street today it looks like the Mardi Gras Parade never happened. It's sad really, I remember years gone by when the weeks before and the weeks after Mardi Gras Oxford Street was awash with people and colour.

I used to be such a support of Mardi Gras, but with the current organisational management and their weirdness I think they are destroying the vibe and the community spirit.
