Response from Clover Moore regarding World Youth Day

A while back when I discovered just how much money the City of Sydney Council was spenidng and so I sent an email to Clover Moore:

Hi,

I am very concerned that the City of Sydney Council is not
recovering costs from World Youth Day.

It is being reported that
the Council will contribute up to 2 million dollars in direct and indirect
funding for World Youth Day. The Catholic Church is a discriminatory
organisation which should support it's own activities and not seek direct or
indirect funds for an event which is not inclusive to all people. This is
not an event which is welcoming to minorities etc.

I also read with
great dismay that Clover Moore as Lord Mayor is supporting the funding both
indirect and direct.

I believe that the Church should pay it's own
costs for this event whether they be direct or indirect should be sought for
this event.

I am extremely disappointed that Clover has not sought
the costs to be recouped and this will affect my vote in upcoming
elections.

Regards

Drew

and received back the following:

It's facsinating that this response is very different than Clover's public statements only a few weeks ago. I get the feeling that a lot of residents have complained about the hideous waste of money that is World Yout Day.

It will be interestingot see just how much money this event really ends up costing the tax payers!

And Guess what

During World Youth Day Catholics will have the option for plenary indulgence or forgiveness of ALL their sins just by doing a prayer in St Mary's Cathedral.

So those naughty Pilgrims can screw around, smoke, drink do drugs and then just go and ask for forgiveness, say this crummy prayer and all is forgiven.

And we wonder why we think the Catholic Church is warped..

Not to mention the Gay & Lesbian Catholic Forum scheduled for this [period has repeatably had its location changed because the Church has stepped in and banned them from meeting.

How do you spell CENSORSHIP!

I for one will be protesting at Taylor Square on the weekend of the Pilgrimage and will be handing out condoms and lube!

Busy as all hell

This week has just been as busy as all hell

and to top it off I have a head cold or to be quite precise, one of my sinuses gets dry and irritated and then causes a sinsus falair up, so I am not sleeping to boot!

I am so glad it's Friday but also not looking forward to the amount of work that I need to get done over the weekend.

The good thing is that last weekend I had an epiphany that has allowed me to launch a new product at least three months before I thought was possible.

So between Sunday to Today I have actually built and am now doing final testing on this particular product!

And if all goes well I have found a new office just for my company, but no details yet until the lease is signed!

So hello Friday!

Do you remember this face?

Do you remember this face?

His name is Matt Leveson and he went missing from Oxford Street in September of 2007. At the time there wasn't a lot of publicity, just another gay guy missing for a while, but he has never turned up.

His car was found dumped out in the Cronulla area after having been partying at Arq nightclub.

The fact that he is missing has coincided with the huge explosion in anti gay violence in and around Oxford street serves to mean he most likely has met an untimely end.

You would have thought though that the increase in noise and the the rallies against violence would have helped solved the problem. Sure the local police are now 'taking down details' or violent homophobic crime around the area.

But they sure aren't stopping it.

A young guy in our apartment building was beaten savagely by some yobs on Saturday night on Oxford street.

As we drove down the strip last Saturday night all I could see was drunk, aggressive straight boys milling around with girls sitting in the gutters puking their guts up.

Oxford street has become a mess, the straight clubs and aggressive young straight males are intimidating gay guys from wanting to even come out on oxford street. Why would you want to wade yourself though the aggressive people who call out at you and potentially get gay bashed?

The police aren't doing anything, they are focusing on arresting clubbers with small amounts of drugs and focusing on the monumental effort of World Youth Day.

Let's not forget Matt Leveson and let's not forget that we as a community have / had a choice and the choice is fast disappearing.

Give it another few years and there will be no gay bars left on Oxford street, and what was once the heart and soul of the gay community and a leading light across the world for gay communities will be gone never to appear again.

Huge Protest Planned against Pope on July 19 2008

World Youth Day condom protest against Pope

Condoms will be handed out to pilgrims en route to a papal Mass at Randwick Racecourse on World Youth Day as part of a protest against the Catholic Church's attitude to homosexuality, contraception and abortion.

A coalition of religious, atheist, gay and lesbian groups will stage the rally in Taylor Square from midday on Saturday July 19 before marching to the main event of the week-long World Youth Day celebrations.

Protest organisers are expecting thousands to gather on Oxford Street and Anzac Parade to rally against the church's attitude.

Rachel Evans, organiser of the NoToPope Coalition formed for the event, said she expected between 1000 and 5000 protesters to turn out and was confident there would be no violent confrontations with pilgrims.

"We will say to them, 'Take up the campaign within the Catholic Church to promote condoms.' We're not planning to get into any trouble. We don't want to condemn Catholic youth for being Catholics. We want to condemn the Pope for being homophobic and anti-condom."

Ms Evans, 33, who represents Community Action Against Homophobia and whose father was a Uniting Church minister, said the coalition would notify police of its route in the next couple of days but she feared the NSW Government "wants to be heavy-handed with protesters".
She said the Pope's teachings contributed to 67,000 women dying every year from backyard abortions and a suicide rate among gay youth that is seven times the average.
"He is clearly a bigot ... many in the Catholic Church are also raising these issues, condemning the Pope for his hateful ideas."

Karl Hand, pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church, "the home of inclusive Christianity", said he hoped there would be no confrontation between protesters, pilgrims and police, but he would not be surprised if it occurred.

He said the Catholic Church misrepresented Christianity and was "extremely uncompassionate towards people who need condoms, abortions, recognition of their relationship - and it's just not being provided by this massive worldwide church that is supposed to be a spiritual leader of people".

Other groups in the NoToPope Coalition are the Socialist Alliance, Resistance, Atheists Sydney and the Raelians, a religious sect that has claimed to have cloned the world's first human being.
Raelian members Eden Bates and Gerry Texeira said it was unfair that their leader, Claude Vorilhon, known as Rael, was denied a visa upon application while the Pope was being feted by Australian governments.

"In the Raelian movement we are very, very clear that all humanity has been designed and part of that design is to have diversity," Ms Bates said.

The Inner Geek (warning highly technical nonsense)

I have been busy as normal (is there any other way for me to be?)

But in with work and some social activities dinners and brunches and stuff, and over the weekend spending 8 hours writing and debugging 19 lines of code - it is important code mind you!

I also last week turned into the total geek and set up a centralised server and DAS (Network Attached Storage) together at home. So now I have 1.5gb of accessible storage which is very easily upgradable to more storage.

I also used the Barracuda Server software to provide a web server and secure Https VPN into the network from outside through the Internet.

It means that we can even stream our music and video over the Internet if we log in through either our own VPN on the computer or through a web browser.

Have I geeked you out yet?

No well there is more too!

The boy and I for years have kept separate music and porn folders which we are putting together.

It's really quite weird when you think about it, we dumped our cds and DVDs together donkeys years together without a problem but amalgamating all of our digital music and video etc is much more difficult.

Not because we don't want to, but because of the complexity of how it happens.

We have several computers and traditionally we have kept all of the digital files on our own usb drives, but now we will put the folders together and let iTunes do it's thing.

Problem is though, technically we want EVERYTHING accessible on a iTunes account on the main server because it's also the media server that is attached to the Plasma and the Amplifier, and then we want to maintain our own play lists and stuff on our own computers but then share these centrally as well....

Ah it's going to be an interesting time as iTunes gets it's act together and does what it does. We have about 40 gb of music together and probably another 100 - 200 gb of video and other stuff together so it's going to be a very very long analysis and consolidation!

I am also waiting for the new bluetooth keyboard and inbuilt mouse with charger to arrive so using the new server can be done from the comfort of a sofa and not on the fucking floor!
And of course I am waiting for the iPhone to be launched here as well so I can start using that too hahahahahaha.
Apart from that I think the next geeky item will be a powered USB hub so I can use it as a charger for all the usb devices we have, and like everyone we seem to have a lot!

Political Wanking

If you are gay and you voted for the Liberal / Coalition in the last election please explain why the dickheads YOU voted for is delaying Labor's plans to grant same-sex financial rights equal to those of heterosexual couples.

Could you please explain this for me?

In simple words if you will, because I am seeing red over this.

If the SIMPLE legislation gets changed before June 30 it can be retrospectively enacted, otherwise it cannot.

And all this because they want to diminish the value of our same sex relationships to include interdependent relationships such as sisters living together.

It's not the fucking same!

A message to Brendan Nelson , you had a gay brother who died of AIDS and you still can;t bring yourself to support equality for gay men.

I used to think it was these people were just mean and nasty, but I think that they just don't get it and they can't sell it to the absolute right wing wankers in their party.

So back to my question - If you voted for these idiots Explain to me why you don't hate yourself?

The Roman diocese has banned the new Dan Brown film from being filmed in a number Catholic Churches in Rome

I love it!

It's a book people, and it's fiction, (much like most of what Catholicism teaches too)

But hey it's great publicity for a movie!

Maybe Clover is getting the point?

The Sydney City Council is refusing the World Youth Day's access to Hyde park in the center if Sydney until they pay the $150,000 bond for fixing up the park after the event.

However the Church is refusing to pay up and the State Government has refused to pay either.

It sounds to me that both the Council and State Government have worked out that World Youth Day is a very unpopular event with Australians.

And even worse, the Devil incarnate will be in Sydney for my Birthday!

I think we are getting ridiculous

In Australia the definition of binge drinking has now been changed to be:

more than four standard drinks a day is binge drinking.

What the hell?

We like to share a bottle of wine most nights with dinner and that's about 3.5 standard glasses each, and maybe before that a Vodka Lime & Soda (Diet tonic) for the boy. That's probably about 1.5 standard drinks in real terms.

So according to the new standards being suggested by the Government we are both 'binge' drinkers.

That also means my parents are binge drinkers, the boy's parents and virtually everyone I know.

This government is starting to become a bunch of wowsers, the reaction to Henson and now the mothering on alcohol. What's next? Walking is dangerous?

Or how bout thinking about naughty things is wrong!

Skinny Male Models the way forward

Fellas too fat for Paris

Posted in FASHION by Ben on Jun 10, 06:00AM

Now the male models are losing weight to achieve the new boy body ideal: skinny, pale, feminine. Peter Munro reports.

David Sciola (pictured, right) was too big for Paris. Weighing just 76 kilograms with a 32-inch waist (81cm), the 188cm-tall model tipped the scales in the French fashion capital.
Working abroad last year, he lost 6kg to strut the catwalks of Milan, but even that was not skinny enough for the Parisian scene - where lean is the new mean.

"In Milan, I trimmed down to about 76kg so I would fit the clothes. I am 6'2", so for me I would say that's underweight," he says. "Paris tends to be even skinnier than Milan. You've got designers like Dior who always go for anaemic, 17-year-old bodies.

"In Milan, I was staying with a guy who modelled for Dior. He was really skinny: he looked like he was going to die. He had been put on the front page of Le Monde for an article about skinny models and male eating disorders. But he assured me it was all totally natural."

As Sciola's size has diminished, so his catwalk stocks have climbed. The 23-year-old model and University of Melbourne media student says that three years ago he looked like a "meat head", weighing a relatively beefy 94kg with a 33-inch waist (83cm) and 42-inch chest (106cm) bulging from weight training.

Urban Gay Communities are Disappearing

A recent report has identified that gay urban communities are disappearing. The report was done to look at ways of HIV prevention in the gay community.

But the report has been far more widely received with the definite decline in gay communities.

Now, it looks like that in cities as diverse as San Francisco, Amsterdam,
Denmark, Toronto, Sydney, and Cape Town, these historically gay neighbourhoods
are on the verge of disappearing, driven by high real estate prices, young gay
people remaining in the suburbs, and greater integration of heterosexuals into
inner cities.

The decline is due to a number of factors, the Internet, equality, sexual acceptance etc, but as I have written before it makes me rather sad.

Will there still be a 'gay' community and 'gay' clubs / pubs in ten years or will the Internet have essentially killed them all off.

Let's face it, the major reason people went out before the Internet was to pick up and socialising was a secondary reason. These days you can log on, order someone in and get off, all without having to leave your house and you never have to actually socialise.

I suppose the questions we have to ask ourselves is whether this is a good or bad thing. Sure the equality that has been gained is fantastic, but are future generations of gay men going to be totally isolated from other gay men apart from for sex.

Or is it even important that there is a gay physical community?

As much as I love the Internet I do think by the time the gay community wakes up to the fact that there are no more gay bars and no more urban gay community it will be too late.

And then we will lament the loss of our community and remember the days when we had a place where it was our community.

More World Youth Day Stupidity

It just keeps on getting worse.

NSW Health has changed their Safe Sex Message from use a condom and lube to abstinence is best...

For crying out loud people WILL have sex so let's arm them with safe sex messages not this bullshit abstinence crap.

I heard through facebook there is a group who will be giving out free condoms on the Pilgrims route along with abortion advice for those unwanted pregnancies.

It's kind of stupid you know all of these thousands of young people all camped out all hyped up, do you reckon it's going to be a hot bed of illicit sex?

Of course it is and they will need condoms.

Further to this I did read somewhere that every World Youth Day always has a spike in STDs.

A Question on a Wednesday Morning...

There seems to be a growing environmental movement worldwide with poses a contradictory or 'inconvenient' theory.

To address global warming which is potentially the downfall of the planet we must embrace Nuclear power.

I am a walking contradiction when it comes to the environment, in many ways I feel that a lot of the work has to be done by business and government, but at the same token I do believe the old mantra think global act local.

But Nuclear power just plain scares me. The problem I have with it is that one small minor accident can render thousands of square kilometres uninhabitable. And accidents do happen, it's just a fact of life.

Anyway are we just burying our head in the sand by not embracing Nuclear power now while we still have time to build plants? Cause they take ten years at least to build not including quite often the years and years of public consultation.

Australia of course is rich in uranium deposits, in fact we have one of the world's largest natural deposits yet all we do with it is dig it out of the ground and send it overseas.

Oil is running out, Coal is running out, Bio Fuels take food away from people Solar is expensive and dirty to create and not overly practical with current technology.

So what else is there?

Wind?
Sea?

What a Weekend!

We had a hugely fun weekend of partying and chilling with lots of friends and interesting new people to boot.

Today is a public holiday in Sydney but I have so much work to do I will spend a lot of the day catching up with stuff that I did not get round to last week.

I was chatting to a younger guy who owns his own bakery business over the weekend and we were discussing running a business and how other people perceive things.

There are two types of people, those who think you should find a real job and you just have some little 'hobby' you do, whilst the others think that you must be rolling in money, and everything that the business earns is yours.

You spend so much time building up the business and pouring so much of the money back into that you become immune by how much money the business makes and how little you take out.

You also work so hard that you lose sight of the goals you set out to achieve because you are spending so much time running the business.

Anyway it was really interesting to talk about business and running a small business!

Some re-arranging

Peter Pan was in last night to see the hanging of the Warhol's and he decided to rearrange our entire art collection!

Much to my husbands despair the panel piece is now downstairs, although I have agreed to go back to the Artist and ask him to provide three additional panels for it that are slightly less 'in your face'.

Trash is now opposite the Warhol's and the entire downstairs has a Pop Art theme with the smaller works like the Chagall and Brennan are upstairs waiting to be grouped in a new way.

The impact downstairs is quite amazing, Peter Pan has considerable talent in the area (well he is one of Australia's leading art dealers) and has pulled everything together really well.

Now I have a blank spot on the wall where the Pro Hart was with two hooks...

What to do what to do!

Maybe a Lichtenstein or a Brian Jones?

Henson's work not obscene

The Crown Prosecuters have pretty much said that Bill Henson's work is not obscene and the images do not break any obscenity laws.

What a great victory for the arts world and the normal art lover.

And what a total kick in the teeth to Kevin Rudd, Morris Lemma, Miranda Devine, Karl Stefanovic, Channel Nine and all the rest.

From this I have lost any respect I may have had for Kevin Rudd. If this is how he will be reacting to contentious issues in the future I doubt he will have much life as a Prime Minister.

Dr Evil gets away by shooting up into Space in a Big Boy Rocket.

Well this morning on the way into the office I saw this in the shop window near our apartment. Half of me wants to go and buy it because it's so silly, while the other half of me wants to not.

Talking of buying things I was over at the Andrew Christian site this morning and

I was all set to buy myself some new underwear. But at the last minute decided I might wait till later in the month...

One of the things I will miss

One of the things I will miss with Gold's Gym officially closing is seeing the following hot straight boys who work there:

Jason Beam

And Tom Webb who used to work there (in the grey Diesel undies)

Of course the other hotty in the pictures is Brodie West (who yes is gay) who in the single year he has been in Sydney has managed to be on the cover of virtually everything and in the gay rags as a model, advertisement and god knows what else.

He is cute though and he does not work at Gold's Gym LOL

And of course I will miss seeing Andres Lundin!

Not sure how I feel...

I am not sure how I feel about the news that Barack Obama is thre Democratic nominee for President.

On the one hand I think he is totally amazing and a truly great orator.

On the other hand I wanted Hilary to run and be president for the 'history' of it all, you know Husband and then wife are Presidents of the United States.

I just don;t know whether a black man can be voted in by the American people, I was not sure a women could be either.
I liked Clinton, I thought she was a true politician, Obama is more an unknown so I will really have to work hard to discover more about him and what he believes in.
So there it is, a true first and hopefully a real first for America too.

10 Million dollars?

Oh what bullshit!

and that almost 140 million dollars could have been spent on proper infrastructure in NSW, or on Nurses or Teachers.

I absolutely believe that unless the Government provides like for like funding to ALL organisations like this then it should be user pays and in this case the Catholic Church certainly has enough money.

Having given away billions in the last couple of years to compensate the victims of a predatory clergy.

For the last couple of days we have been looking after Margeaux's mini schnauzer Rosie, or as I affectionately call her 'Mogwai' from the movie Gremlins.

She has taken to limping when we watch and then walking fine when she thinks we are not watching, obviously getting more attention when she limps.
endnote: The Mogwai has gone home and the puppy has gone back to being normal beagle, although I think she misses the Mogwai as much as I miss the Mogwai :)

With all of the recent exposure of Bill Henson's photography I was reminded of my love of photography and in particular of the Australian Photographer William Yang

I first fell in total love with his work when he was featured in the Blue magazine in the nineties, especially the portraits where he writes the events and circumstance of the photo.

In fact we wandered to one of the galleries in Paddington, where we saw a few works which I liked but also found out how much the work above is, and now I have another desire to add a photograph to my obsessive collecting!

Anyway I am off to do some more obsessing!

Threat to stall same-sex reforms

Phillip Coorey Chief Political CorrespondentJune 2, 2008

AFTER fighting for years for equal recognition before the law, gay and lesbian couples face another wait because of Coalition threats to delay the Government's legislation.

The Herald has been told that the Opposition's legal affairs spokesman, George Brandis, would push at today's meeting of the shadow cabinet for the Coalition to use its numbers and send the legislation to a Senate committee. The legislation, which Labor promised before the election, removes discrimination against gay couples in about 100 areas of Commonwealth law.

It does not bestow the right to marriage but gives gay couples the same rights as heterosexual de facto couples in sharing benefits such as Commonwealth superannuation and veterans' benefits.

Labor wants the legislation, which is before Parliament, passed before July 1. Any delay could push the debate back until September, leaving it at the mercy of the new Senate.
John Challis, of the CompSuper Action Committee, said he was appalled at Senator Brandis's plans. Gays would be denied the satisfaction of being recognised as equals of heterosexual de facto couples.

"It's charity, it's not social justice," Mr Challis said. "It's got nothing to do with equality between gay and heterosexual couples."
