It's coming up that time of year

It is that time of year already, the Christmas carols and decorations have been bombarding us in shopping centres and stores for at least two months now. But as of a few more days it will really be the month of excess consumerism.

With this always comes the inevitable slow down before and after Christmas of virtually all other business except for retail. I always get stressed about business at this time of year wanting to make sure the company has enough work to keep the income streaming in, but not too much that over Christmas there is time to relax.

So the next couple of weeks will be a mix of stress and relaxation!

With friends like these who needs enemies!

They say all is fair in love and war, but what about friends and business?

It's true that business is war and friendships are often tested and destroyed by business relationships. The Cold War between my ex mate and I took an even lower note today, and even I was amazed at how low it could get after being told last week I will lose my office early in the new year.

So one of my sales people has been doing some extra work for a friend of my ex mate. This is cool because she is only working for my part time and it was something non competitive. Today though she sent me an email where she was asked to work for one of the associated companies of my ex mates.

This would be fine all except for the fact that we are competitors in some areas.

Now you know forgive me if I am wrong but, trying to poach your staff is pretty nasty when you are a big business, but when you are a small business and not to mention were a good mate?

Mind you my staff are pretty damn loyal and in this case after they declined and pointed out that there is a conflict they said no and told me straight away.

There is some element that my mate may not have known but it's so remote it's a non event.

There is also a chance that it was not well thought out that asking my staff to work for them would be a conflict of interest.

But again the chance is slim, so I am pretty much happy in many ways that I know this chapter will end soon and I will be in a new office soon enough and away from this silliness.

Election Day

Today is Election day in Australia, a day as Winston Churchill famously stated will go down in infamy.

The campaign has been awash with negativity and dirty tricks, predominantly from the Liberal / Coalition. There is a mood of change in the air, but who knows what tonight will bring?

All the polls point to a Labour victory, but it ain't over yet and we will still have to sit through the day and see what transpires.

I saw the side poll on SMH and it did surprise me that the 74% of respondents think that Labour will win.
I am undecided on who will win, one because I am afraid of jinxing it, and the other because I think sometimes dead cats do bounce and we haven't seen all the dirty tricks of a Howard Government yet.
Whatever happens today I can pretty much be rest assured that I will be hung over tomorrow morning! We are having some friends over for dinner tonight including the adorable Nick.

I hate people who come to work sick and 'soldier on'

There is nothing worse than being in an office environment with people who are obviously contagious.

There is someone in my office who should be at home, they are hacking up parts of their lungs by the sound of it and let's face it spreading whatever it is they have around!
If I start hacking up my lungs next week I am suing. Either that or spiking their drink with laxatives

The expected is going to happen

Well this morning the expected happened, and I will have to move out of the offices I share in January.

I am more than a little pissed off by this as I have spent money on fixing the office in the last month, which is now going to be wasted.

The situation as it stands is the company I share with and the company they have invested in needs larger offices. I get the feeling that the main investor in the companies has looked at the finances of both and scratched their head as to why they need two separate offices and has suggested that sharing an office is a good way of saving 100K a year.

Yeah sure it's business and it's far, but my mate would have known this for a fair while (months) and to now tell me when the world goes into shut down mode over Christmas just pisses me off.

Mind you this is the guy who is having a battle of wills with the puppy and basically went from being one of my closest friends to barely saying hello to me.

So in the long run it's for the best, but I now have to find a new office, and one that I can continue to bring the puppy too.

Who talking of which obviously senses that my ex mate doesn't like her as she keeps away and unlike every other person she does not jump on or go near when he is around.

I am a big believer that animals sense people's true inner self and I think she has a far greater instinct than us humans do!

I am not looking forward to looking for offices, apart from the fact that it will be a huge and unexpected expense for the company (moving, new leases, new marketing material, phone lines changed, Internet connections bonds etc) I don't like the uncertainty of it all either. The very least they could do is not ask for rent for December and January, but I doubt that will happen.

I have to really stop myself and bite my tongue because there are just so many things that I want to say. But what goes around comes around and there is more elegance in keeping quiet and being the bigger person.

So if anyone knows of cool groovy office space to share in or around the CBD, Surry Hills, Paddington, Darlinghurst or East Sydney tell me! Oh and don't forget the beagle comes too!

I Love Light!

I have a real thing for lights, no I mean a REAL obsession. From my bloom pot to my Austrian glass lights I love all sorts of really funky and cool lights.
One of my favorite things is furniture which double up as a light. I came across this idea for a bench and pot and I just fell in love!
If I had my way our roof terrace would be filled with glowing furniture lights!
You can buy all this stuff at Generate Design in Canada, so if anyone is looking for that cool present for me here are some ideas!

Long Days of work

I am behind the eight ball right now with work, setting up new services, chasing new clients and completing new product launches.

Anyone who ever thinks of starting their own business I would recommend getting their head read!

Running a small business for in excess of 5 years sure has it's ups and downs.

All I want to do is sleep, but I'm a real insomniac and when I do fall asleep I tend to wake up and starting going over work and other stuff in my head. I even have a habit when I am really busy working of composing emails in my head and even doing computer programming!

Counting down the days

I have been relatively quiet n the issue of the upcoming Federal Election in Australia, mainly because I think my desires for a fairer more honest Government are well known.

I was chatting to a client about the election and ideologies of the respective political parties and it turned out that she lives in the electorate of Wentworth, which until recent times was a blue ribbon conservative seat. But with the electoral boundaries redrawn last year it's now very much a swinging seat.

The incumbent member is one of the 'chosen' ones in conservative politics and was tipped to potentially be a future Prime Minister. But he is in gave danger of losing his seat to the opposition.

But the conservatives have to show just how devious and cynical they are by starting a campaign saying his opposition is not a legal candidate.

How do you spell Florida?

It looks like this election may actually be lost and won, not by the great democratic choice of the people but by the courts.

I reckon it's going to be a nail biting finish and I reckon the conservative pollies will mount legal challenges on any grounds they can, after all they don't care what the people actually vote for or think...

Early twenties skinny but with nice biceps and a shaved dark head of hair.

Very cute eye candy indeed!

Weekends are made for fun!

We seem to be quite social at the moment seeing people a lot, having dinners and generally having a lot of fun. It's a nice balance against the amount of work we both tend to do and the weekend just past was not exception.

On Sunday the boy went off to play paintball (gay team against straight team) and cam back covered in nasty welts and bruises, whilst I ended up with Nick at Phoenix for an hour on Sunday morning. Phoenix Rising is the new replacement for the day club Manacle which closed last month.

If you have ever been to a day club totally sober and having slept all night (and staying sober) you will know what a hoot it was.

It was actually a whole lot of fun and it's amazing who you run into at these sorts of things.

Then last night we went down to FagTag at the Opera Bar on Sydney harbor. This is the second time we have been to this event and every time we go I am reminded just how fun the event is but also just how beautiful Sydney Harbour is!
Anyway I have a huge week and my to do list looks like the list of lists it's so long so no long post today.

When I was looking for pictures for this I typed Opera Bar Sydney Fag into Google and I ended up with my image from last year as the number one Image Result!

I walk to work every morning with the puppy in tow (or the puppy pulls me) through what is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

I decided to try and capture just some of the beauty of the city as I walked in yesterday to show just how beautiful Sydney can be!
These pictures do not do Sydney Justice but this is part of the walk that I do every morning.

Is it just me or is Kevin Colvin cute?

Is it just me or is Kevin Colvin the guy who was busted by his boss from a Facebook picture hot? Kevin has become notorious for telling his boss he had a family emergency and needed time off and then a picture of him at a Halloween party was loaded on Facebook.

Personally I think he is pretty hot actually!

When Facebook gets its search back I am adding him as a Friend!

Sometimes the totally unplanned are the most fun

Last Friday we had nothing specific planned and we were just planning on having a quiet night in, but that soon went out the window.

Danger Mouse rang mid afternoon and asked if we wanted to head down to Slide to have a few drinks and meet an old school friend of his who he had re-connected with through Facebook.

It sounded like fun so we said yes, but before that could happen Nick messaged to say he was wandering by and so he came up for a coffee which turned into an open bottle of wine, which then turned into Army Boy, and another friend, Danger Mouse, Nick and later Danger Mouse's friend and even his flatmate too.

And then even later another friend of Danger Mouse's who we also knew came over before he was heading out to FOMO at Arq.

So many bottles of wine and a very fun dinner up the road reminded me just how much fun a totally impromptu night can be.

We ended in bed fast asleep just after midnight whilst Danger Mouse entertained his friend downstairs on the sofa (I don't want to know the details).

The rest of the weekend was spent busily doing chores and lots and lots of entertaining, drinking and socialising.

I also have one cryptic comment for the day ... Barriers do not improve performance when people get distracted, they just hide what people are doing.

Yesterday was a shite day!

Yesterday started off badly, on the way to work I witnessed an accident not more than five metres in front of me when a truck tried to overtake a car. The car ended up sideways squashed between two other cars and the truck.

At least it looked like no one was hurt so that was good.

Then once I was in the office I had the most vitriolic and down right childish email from a client. One of our clients who we still do a bit of work for found out we offer a total solution (re-branded) for their industry.

We built an eCommerce site for a store based on our Content Management Solution using our eCommerce Architecture, and then we did further in dependant development so that the we could actually make the software into a turn key solution.

Contractually we own the code entirely as it's based not just on our actual architecture but it's also written into our contracts. We have also spent the last year refining the concept into a cool product solution which we now sell as a branded product.

When they found out because Google now lists us in the top three search results for the solution (and we only launched last week) . I was threatened with all sorts of things and we were told in no uncertain terms that we were to take our company name off all of their websites.

I was expecting a reaction when the client found out but not the childishness we got.

I am also battling the builder of our apartment to fix defects in the apartment which again they are refusing to do, which just means more stress, lawyers and the like.

And to top it all off I was told that someone in our car park had their car broken into in our car park and had the buzzer to open the garage door stolen.

Just frigging great cause that means we have to get all the buzzers reprogrammed.

I hate stupid people and I have to say that this new tenant who left the buzzer in their car takes the cake.

Let's hope that today is better.

Toy of Year drug shock

Authorities in NSW have placed an immediate ban on a popular craft toy after its beads were found to contain the toxic drug GHB, or fantasy.

The toy "Bindeez", which took out the 2007 Toy of the Year award at the Melbourne Toy and Hobby fair, contains hundreds of beads which can induce seizures, drowsiness or a coma, if eaten.

All Bindeez goods would be removed from sale, Minister for Fair Trading Linda Burney said today, and households with the toy were urged to remove it from any area where it could be accessed by children.

"This Bindeez product is Australian Toy of the Year, it is extraordinarily popular," the minister told reporters today.

"We issuing right now a total banning order right across NSW."

The beads should contain a non-toxic glue but instead they contains a different chemical which the body metabolises into gamma-hydroxy butyrate (GHB), also known as fantasy or Grievous Bodily Harm.

Ms Burney said an investigation into the toy, which is manufactured in Hong Kong, also would look at whether the substitution was deliberate.

Two children in NSW, a two-year-old boy and a ten-year-old girl, have been admitted to hospital in the past ten days after eating the beads.

The power of utter geekdom!

I am a geek, I keep on saying this over and over and over again. I love gadgets and I love technology in general.

Over the last several months I have become more and more hooked on Facebook, to the point that over the weekend I spent hours and hours on it, commenting , tagging and generally having fun!

But in addition to Facebook, I also Twitter pretty reguarly (it links in to facebook), I Google Map, I Blog, I Pownce, I IM, and I Skype.

I use my mobile phone extensively for reading RSS feeds in addition to surfing the web (badly) , taking pictures with my mobile phone and uploading them to Flickr, Facebook etc.

I am a total techno geek and I want more more more more!

and talking of geeks I am loving this idea in the very funny video so much I think I might go out and get one!

The problem with being social

The problem with being social is being social - make no sense well let me explain.

Since we have been back from our holiday / work thingy, we have been extremely social, going out, partying, clubbing, having people for dinner and going out for dinner.

While this is all fun, sometims you just need to have a quiet night where no one comes over and you have nothing to do. But never fear what woudl a weekend be without total and utter distraction by drinking, partying and meeting new people?

This weekend we met some boys from Hawaii who are friends of a good friend who divides his time between Hawaii, LA and the rest of the world.

Now we love meeting new people, especially when one of them is a smokingly hot straight boy who takes his shirt off when asked (yes this was after dinner at ours).

Also after careful consideration and in discussion with Danger Mouse, who has an alter ego named Hank. I have decided taht from now on when I am a trashy mole or having a big weekend it will no longer be me, in fact it will be alter ego 'BOB', and Bob will be referred to in the third person.

Fundies equate access to condoms with having sex

An Australian organisation sending free condoms to students who TXT their address is under fire from a group of Fundamentalists.

The Australian Family Association says that this will encourage kids to have sex!

No AFA, they are already having sex, now they can do it safely without the risk of pregnancy or Sexually TRasnmitted diseases.

It always makes my blood boil these idiots. All this sort of 'don't have sex education' does is just discourage kids from being open and honset and sex and ensure they don't get the facts and instead have to rely on dangerous myths.

Get a grip!

The Original QAF

Having a day working from home

Just like the title reads I am working from home today, this does not mean that I will be moping around at home watching movies, no siree

Instead it just means that instead of working from the office I spend the day working from home. I have already managed to spend about 3 hours talking to clients on the phone thus far and I am feeling hoarse!

The throat is no longer sore, it's now just the sinuses that are are inflamed and so I am squirting saline solution up my nose to irrigate anything that might be lurking up there.

Of course I would love to use one of those nasal decongestant sprays and make my head feel all better, but I have a history with those.

About seven years ago I became addicted to nasal sprays to the point I was using them every three - four hours and would even wake up in the night use it and go straight back to sleep.

I did try looking up the official medical name given to nasal spray addiction but I got side tracked and ended up looking at articles on Nasal Spray addiction like this one in the New York Times.

In the end with my addiction I realised there was a real problem when at three o'clock one morning (years ago) I made the boy drive me to an all night Pharmacy to get a new bottle. Well I actually bought about four just to be certain!

So these days I will not use them, and since I hate the decongestant over the counter tablets make me feel shaky (I don't one comment from friends who know me and know how ridiculous this seems that I will not take them!), I just have to wait for the sinuses to stop being inflamed and just put up with it.

At least though I am getting through work today (although slightly slower than normal).
